Rose honed in on a patch of grass, her nose searching back and forth, and then she pulled forward almost into the shrubby blackthorn that grew there.

Jonny shone his light as Rose lay down and let out a bark. Her tail was wagging triumphantly. She had found something.

“Good girl,” Moira said and pulled a ball from her pocket. “Win,” she said and offered the dog the ball.

Rose took it and danced away like a puppy playing. Her interest in the search was over; now, she wanted to play.

Moira and Jonny approached the spot Rose had indicated. He shone the torch into the thick grass. At first, they saw nothing. Using his booted foot, Jonny moved the grass from side to side, and then they saw it. Gleaming in the torchlight was a watch.

Moira knelt, retrieving it gently with an evidence bag. It was undeniably Cathy's.

A sigh of relief escaped Jonny's lips. "It's not much, but it's something, and it’s not a body."

Moira nodded, cradling the watch in an evidence bag in her palm. "It means she was here. And if she was here, there's a trail."

The glint of hope in their eyes was undeniable. This place was remote; there were no cameras unless the car lot had some, but there might be a witness. Tire prints were clear. Jonny was already photographing them and was on his phone to get a unit out to search the area. The watch was bagged. Maybe the killer had left a print or DNA on it. Maybe a passing car with a dashcam could give them a clue. There had to be something. They were one step closer to unraveling the mystery of Cathy's disappearance. Moira was sure of it, but would they be in time?
